Cheese Strata (with Meat, or Meatless)

This is a great breakfast/brunch dish. We have served it at our church's Holiday Fair for years, with great success.

Equipment

  • 9×13 inch pan

Ingredients

  • 12 slices hearty bread cut into 1 inch pieces (no larger)
  • 12 oz. sharp cheddar cheese grated
  • 6 eggs slightly beaten
  • cups whole milk
  • 2 tbsp. minced onion cooked
  • ¼ tsp. ground mustard

For either version

  • 1 10 oz pkg chopped frozen broccoli (cook and drain) or a combination of other cooked vegetables (i.e. cooked spinach, cooked mushrooms, or sun-dried tomatoes)

For meat version

  • 2 cups diced cooked ham or cooked sausage

For veggie version

  • omit meat
  • 2 cups cooked vegetables add in addition

Instructions

  • Butter 9×13 inch pan
  • Place half the bread on bottom of pan.
  • Alternate layers of cooked meat, vegetables, cheese and remaining bread.
  • Combine the beaten eggs, milk, onion and mustard. Pour over the casserole
  • Cover and refrigerate overnight.
  • Bake uncovered at 325F for 55 minutes, until the center is set. Remove from the oven and let cool for 10 minutes before serving
